Rockport is a coastal town on the tip of Cape Ann in northeastern Massachusetts, surrounded by rocky shoreline, small coves, and the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The town developed from fishing, quarrying, and maritime trade, and its harbor remains central to its identity. Bearskin Neck, a narrow waterfront peninsula, contains galleries, shops, restaurants, and working boats. Rockport’s landscape is marked by granite ledges and exposed coastal rock, while wooded inland areas provide a contrast to the shoreline. Its compact center makes the harbor, historic buildings, and waterfront closely connected.

Rockport’s cultural identity has been shaped by its fishing and quarrying traditions as well as its long association with artists. Granite from Cape Ann quarries was used in buildings, bridges, and other structures throughout the region, and remnants of the quarry industry remain visible around town. Artists were drawn to Rockport’s distinctive coastal scenery, contributing to the formation of an established art community. The Rockport Art Association & Museum preserves this tradition through exhibitions and collections. Historic buildings and maritime structures around the harbor also reflect the town’s development as a working coastal settlement.

Motif No. 1, a red fishing shack on Bradley Wharf, is Rockport’s best-known landmark and has become closely associated with the town’s artistic heritage. Halibut Point State Park occupies the northern edge of Cape Ann, where visitors can explore a former granite quarry, coastal trails, and rocky shoreline overlooking the Atlantic. Front Beach and Back Beach provide different coastal settings near the town center, while nearby Straitsmouth Island sits just offshore. The Bearskin Neck waterfront offers views across Rockport Harbor and access to shops, galleries, and boat excursions, including trips focused on the surrounding coastline and marine life.

Seafood is central to Rockport’s local food traditions, with lobster, clams, scallops, oysters, and locally caught fish commonly served in restaurants. The town also reflects broader New England traditions such as clam chowder and lobster rolls. Rockport’s artistic identity remains visible in the concentration of galleries around Bearskin Neck and in the continued presence of artists working in the area. Motif No. 1 is especially notable because it has been painted and photographed repeatedly by artists attracted to its simple form and harbor setting. The combination of granite, fishing, art, and rocky coastline gives Rockport a distinct place on Cape Ann.
